Anyway, I learnt to swim under the water in a sort of butterfly legs, breastroke arms fashion first, and could go much further that way than on the surface for some time. I thought it was an instinctive way of keeping afloat whilst your Dad tried to teach you front crawl. I mean that somebody explains to you the difference between 'thrashing around trying to stay afloat' and 'leaning forwards slightly and propelling yourself in the intended direction'.
