Where's the sidestroke which many of our generation learnt first?

What's the difference between back stroke and back crawl? Anyway, I learnt to swim under the water in a sort of butterfly legs, breastroke arms fashion first, and could go much further that way than on the surface for some time. Interestingly, that's exactly what my daughters have done too.

I mean you lie on your back, move your legs like you do for breast-stroke and scull with your hands. Is there another name for this?

Out of the choices it was front crawl, but in reality it was kicking behind a polystyrene float.

Is 'doggy paddle' really a learnt stroke?

I thought it was an instinctive way of keeping afloat whilst your Dad tried to teach you front crawl. (ref. all those films of ickle baybees being thrown in swimming pools)

I mean that somebody explains to you the difference between 'thrashing around trying to stay afloat' and 'leaning forwards slightly and propelling yourself in the intended direction'.
