We use the term patron and customer and I'm not crazy about either. The one I like the best is member since to me it implies community.

I think library user covers almost everybody who comes into the library irregardless of the type of library. I like this term. I like client as well.

We use patron; however, I've never particularly liked that. Still, don't know what else to use -- client is used in some locations, I know -- user isn't very "friendly" -- what about some unique word that some clever person might come up with?

people in our community - some use the library directly, some don't - but our mandate is to serve our community. Even people who don't use the library value the service we provide, and having a library in a community has socioeconomic benefits.

There are a multitude of options, but patron seems to be a "one size fits all"....
Non community Visitors, taxpayers, recipricol members, etc. and too many other categories using the library for individual needs. The local citizenry really is the "shareholder", but I'd never want this to become more business oriented for the public than needed. My view as a trustee and patron, volunteer, Friends/Book Club member, etc.

"Client" is a good word that is used in many libraries, but you have skewed the poll against it by leaving it out unless we add it as "other".
I like "patron" also because of the very positive connotation, e.g. patron of the arts or museum patron.
"Member" is a problem for public libraries as we welcome people regardless of whether they have a card or not. "Customers" is associated with spending money, so again is contrary to free public libraries.
