"Will Sarah Palin help McCain's campaign?"

From Deb on August 31, 2008 at 9:50 amIP Logged, 70.233.143.x  Report Abuse
Dear "Concerned Citizen" - Justice Thomas's duty is not to advance the interest of a group of Americans (that's why we have elected representatives) but to interpret the Constitution and Bill of Rights according to the purpose for which it was intended (empower government to keep the nation secure while limiting its powers to prevent abuse of inalienable tights). "Concerned Citizen" (CC) probably did not learn in school, but he / she did learn to stereotype and demonize other viewpoints (how truly educated. No tolerance from "CC"!Maybe "CC" wants a liberal / judicial activist court that will act in its superlegislative role to once and for all impose its subjective interpretation of the Constitution to centralize all power in D.C. while wiping away all vestiges of representative democracy (except, of course, for those citizens in the bluest-of-blue states). Yes, "CC" will be happy when Republicans and Conservatives are dispatched to the dustbin of history. No place for those fascists and sexist pigs in our elitist state! Tolerance for competing ideas? That's not what "CC" and his / her ilk meant. For this "correct thinking" group, tolerance means "I want to engage in any behavior I want without being told that it's wrong...oh, and if things go wrong, I want a government program to correct and pay for the problems I created." What a far cry from the classical liberal of Jefferson's time...Finally, while you are throwing the "sexist" lable around, how is it that you let His Holiness the Great Obama out of the conversation? Hillary wasn't good enough to be his VP and now Palin isn't good enough. Just who the hell in the female world IS good enough for The Mighty O? There were NO Dem./ liberal women out there? And Biden isn't an effort to relate to white dudes? Dear "CC" --- your cover is blown. Hypocrite.

Firstly, as for Clarence Thomas, of course his duty isn't to advocate for black people, but it is obvious his color was the only reason for his nomination. He had never served on a major State of Federal court or even written an opinion about a ruling. The parallel between him and Ms. Palin (incompetence but minority status) is striking.

You have accused me of demonization of other viewpoints, but in light of your rant, such and accusation is ironic. I have disagreed, but I have not been intolerant. As an American citizen in the Democratic process, I reserve the right to disagree.

Thank for assuming that I am a liberal: I am honored. However, how can you possibly confuse my hope for positive change in America with some sort of coup d'etat for fascist liberality. How can you call me a demonizer without total hypocrisy, and then call me a hypocrite, with double hypocrisy.

You have called Obama's nomination of Biden sexist, but a President is not obligated to pick a woman. That is obvious. As for relating to "white dudes", given current statistics, Obama has had no trouble doing that.

You have stereotyped and demonized me, and despite your like accusation, the truth here is obvious and apparent to everyone.

She is not the right person for the job let alone the right woman. Their are many more women in the republican party who could have been far better choices. She was chosen because she looks like the typical soccer mom and they are trying to get more votes from that group. She's anti abortion even when it comes to matters of incest and rape, she supported Pat Buchanan for president in the past among other things and she's under investigation for really abusing her power and she's only been in office for a year and a half. She clearly isn't what the "hillary voters" would want as someone representing them.

As far as experience, alaska has a total popluation smaller than most major cities, their problems are not anywhere near the same level as something national or even something from a state with a larger poplation. Her "story" may sound nice around the edges but once people get to the center of what she believes and what her accomplishments really are they'll take a step back and say "wow they must really think we are stupid"

The allegations of abuse of power are bogus, if you actually take the time to look into it.

At least she has executive experience; that's more than can be said for Commiebama and his plagarizing sidekick.

A fabulous outside the box pick by the Maverick. I don't agree with him on a lot of things, but I'm far happier casting my vote for him today than I was before the Palin pick.

      LOL
I see where the word "Fuzzy" applies here - it's in your logic.
The courts will decide what is and is not bogus, not a Repub crony.
"Executive experience" - laughable. I personally know "executives" who have authority over approximately as many people as Alaska, who have made deals with more foreign countries than she can probably remember (in short more "executive" experience than her measly eighteen months as Governor) that are still not ready to take the highest office in the land.
Communism is dead - except in name. It has been proven to be a miserable failure Even China is adopting Capitalism. At least adopt a vernacular that isn't 50 years old.
Finally, if you want to respond to someone and not look unschooled, take the time to check your spelling - it's "plagiarizing". If you can't spell the word, turn on spell check.

Back when the first woman was nominated by a major party to be vice president, conservatives didn't react quite so positively as today. In August 1984, an editorial in the National Review mocked Democrats for choosing Geraldine Ferraro to run with former Vice President Walter Mondale. "The Democrats will attempt to project the issue as 'whether a woman can be Vice President,' a point the Republicans can cheerfully concede, returning to the question of whether this woman in particular should be the Vice-President ... Mrs. Ferraro is manifestly an affirmative-action nominee. She has been in the House only since 1979 and cannot be said, on the record, to be as qualified to be President, if necessary, as, say John Glenn, Fritz Hollings, Mo Udall, or -- George Bush."

Looking back on the Ferraro nomination, another well-known conservative wrote: "I believe that someday we are going to have a woman president, possibly during my life, and I've often thought the best way to pave the way for this was to first nominate and elect a woman as vice-president. But I think Mondale made a serious mistake when he picked Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. In my view, he guessed wrong in deciding to take a congresswoman that almost nobody had ever heard of and try to put her in line for the presidency ... I don't know who among the Democrats might have been a better choice, but it was obvious Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro simply because he believed there was a 'gender gap' where I was concerned and she was a woman."

Those are the words of Ronald Reagan in his 1991 memoir, "An American Life," pouring scorn on the nomination of a woman who had served six years in Congress working on foreign policy issues. In retrospect, he had a point. Only this Palin gambit could make the Ferraro mistake look responsible and wise. --From Joe Conason's column on Salon.com.

If you have any doubt about what a game-changer this appointment represents, take a look at some of your local election results - and see how women fare in races against men. Women routinely trounce men in our locak judicial races, and if you ask you women friends, they admit that when in doubt, they vote for the woman. Very few men do so, but if a candidate draws a disproportionate share of the female vote, that candidate tends to win handily.

I think it's about time qualified women got a shot at it. As a man, I think, with some exceptions, we have screwed things up badly.

It is not unreasonable to look carefully at Sarah Palin's experience so long as one regards not only the quantity, but the quality of it as well. Gov. Palin can show a number of accomplishments; not least of which: taking on and defeating corruption in her own party. How does Obama compare?

Further, though I can't quite put my finger on it (perhaps others can chime in) there seems in most of the arguments against Palin, an assumption that the office of vice-president (and/or president) is too exalted for a mere American citizen however wholesome and productive - that only the high priests of the political class (or their designees) need apply. I.e. it's not the content of your character, it is (as they say in Chicago) "Who sent you?"

Not all commentators expressing concern about Palin as VP-pick betray this notion of elitism, but a lot of them do. Let us remember that government is instituted by the people (cf Declaration of Independence) and that "the state" is not (as Hagel and Hobbes would have it) the fount of political authority.

Neo-royalists, elitists, collectivists, statists, and utopian socialists are blind to this "self-evident truth". It is a shibboleth. Watch for it in the arguments.

Some good points. However, the world has gotten a lot more complicated since the institution of this country. Just because someone is productive and well meaning it does not necessarily qualify them for the highest position in the land. I don't think that's elitist.
