Enough with her burned banana bread, Kari's got to go. (when you serve on Grand Jury she bakes you banana bread.....she can't bake either). From Mike on September 20, 2008 at 6:47 am. As for me the DA's race is the most important on the ballot--what will affect Albuquerque more? We need someone who will reduce/eliminate these outrageous plea bargains and put repeat offenders away. Most of the murders we've had of late--see Espinosa in the parking garage, etc--were repeat offenders "on probation." What a crock. From Me on September 17, 2008 at 10:58 pm. We need a tough DA that stands for law and order. Under the current DA, I have not seen any hard hitting case against drug dealers and gang members. Crime is alive and well in Albuquerque. When we loose Darren White to Congress, who in Albuquerque is going to stand for law and order. From fiona in reply to Me on October 2, 2008 at 1:28 am. I guess you haven't been paying much attention to what is really happening in our courts. The hard and successful work that is done everyday by our Assistant DA's goes unnoticed because the media doesn't see a story in the 95% of cases that are successful or those times when a prosecutor can actually persuade a judge to impose a substantial prison sentence, only those cases where someone's unhappy (often because they expect something that is impossible under our laws) or the media thinks they can manufacture a story, facts be damned. Even the police officers who submit cases often fail to recognize the good results on most cases, and sometimes conclude that nothing's been done when that's 100% wrong, they just didn't check up to find out the real result. The worst thing that can be said about most cases is that our prosecutors don't or can't take the time to brag about their success stories since they are moving onto the next demanding case. The way everyone loves to blame the prosecutors anytime things don't turn out the way they want it to makes you wonder why anyone steps forward to take on this thankless and underpaid profession. Thank goodness we have some wonderful people who still believe they can make a difference, and make the personal sacrifices necessary to perform this essential job. From concerned citizen on September 16, 2008 at 11:18 pm. Kari is a joke. SHe has never used the three strike law we've had for years. Plus the Mishad (vet) case, Moya case, to name a few. Lets get a conservative in office and make some changes. THe police work their tails off, so should the DA's office. Lisa Torraco for DA From fiona in reply to concerned citizen on October 2, 2008 at 1:07 am. Have you ever even read the NM 3 strikes law? IT is a total joke, and the laugh's on any NM citizen that thinks it is worth anything. Even the worst of the worst criminals do not qualify for "3 strikes" since it was written by defense lawyers and passed by politicians who wanted to look good without really putting anyone in prison for long. These are the same politicians who gutted the NM Habitual Offender Act a few years ago so that even life-long felons with 6 or more felony convictions no longer face extra prison time if it's been long enough since their last conviction (like if they've been in jail somewhere, or their defense attorney can drag things out long enough to evade the wimpy law that remains in place). Face it folks, NO PROSECUTOR will be able to put the really bad guys away for long enough under present law, at least until they kill someone and commit a bunch of additional crimes that give enough leverage to put 'em away where they should be. Before you criticize Kari Brandenburg or any other real prosecutor in the state, go do your homework and read the law. When you do that then call your legislator and scream at them until they realize that the citizens of NM need habitual offender laws with some teeth, not the useless excuses for laws that are on the books now. January's coming, so now's the time to start demanding sentencing laws that actually work! From No Way on September 16, 2008 at 11:49 am. Lisa Defends sick-o so they can prey again! From To No Way in reply to No Way on October 26, 2008 at 10:54 am. Has anyone taken a look at her husbands past? Does anyone care that the man she is married to took a 15 year old child as his wife when he was 32 and forced her to have three children with him by the age of 18? How tough will she really be against those accused of sex crimes? Page: 1 2
