Have you ever even read the NM 3 strikes law? IT is a total joke, and the laugh's on any NM citizen that thinks it is worth anything. Even the worst of the worst criminals do not qualify for "3 strikes" since it was written by defense lawyers and passed by politicians who wanted to look good without really putting anyone in prison for long. These are the same politicians who gutted the NM Habitual Offender Act a few years ago so that even life-long felons with 6 or more felony convictions no longer face extra prison time if it's been long enough since their last conviction (like if they've been in jail somewhere, or their defense attorney can drag things out long enough to evade the wimpy law that remains in place). Face it folks, NO PROSECUTOR will be able to put the really bad guys away for long enough under present law, at least until they kill someone and commit a bunch of additional crimes that give enough leverage to put 'em away where they should be.

Before you criticize Kari Brandenburg or any other real prosecutor in the state, go do your homework and read the law. When you do that then call your legislator and scream at them until they realize that the citizens of NM need habitual offender laws with some teeth, not the useless excuses for laws that are on the books now. January's coming, so now's the time to start demanding sentencing laws that actually work!
