IP Logged, 71.60.231.x Report Abuse Here's something to remind parents around the water cooler in the morning, in case they didn't hear McCain very well tonight: "I am in favor of leaving the tax rates alone and reducing the tax burden on middle-income Americans by doubling your tax exemption for every child from $3,500 to $7,000." From James on October 7, 2008 at 10:27 pm. IP Logged, 72.13.219.x Report Abuse I keep hearing how much money we spend in iraq. Is this amount above and beyond how much we would spend on those troops in training? From Gullyborg in reply to James on October 7, 2008 at 11:08 pm. IP Logged, 71.34.68.x Report Abuse Thank you for raising that point - the answer is "not much." It is not like we went out and hired 150,000 new troops, trained them, equipped them, and sent them to Iraq on top of everything else we do with the military. Almost all the "cost" of the Iraq war is the same ongoing costs the military has whether we are at war or the troops are all doing drill at Ft Bragg. Salaries for the combat troops are a little higher because of combat pay. There are real costs in terms of treating injured soldiers. Logistics costs money. But most of $700 billion was going to spent dropping practice bombs on Nevada whether we deployed or not. So it is very disingenuous of politicians to keep throwing out numbers of the "cost" of the war. I think a better question is "what is the cost of LOSING the war?" Or, in Obama's case, of never going? Saddam still in power? A safe haven for al-Qaeda? An endless stream of $25,000 payments to the families of suicide bombers? How about greater threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil? Politicians like to keep saying the war in Iraq was a distraction from the war on terror... but haven't we been terror free despite the war? Or, because of the war?
