"Why Do You Homeschool?"

From Anna on December 3, 2007 at 10:10 pmIP Logged, 67.180.228.x  Report Abuse
In addition to everything else I checked, I homeschool so that my children can develop at their own pace, socially and spiritually, as well as academically. One of my children is very sensitive and emotional, and I wanted to give him a safe environment to build his self-confidence, without the constant social pressures of the typical school environment. I wanted to give my children the opportunity to be healthier, where I could influence their food choices, and get them outside and in nature, rather than sitting indoors for hours at a time. I wanted to give them freedom to discover who they are and what it is they want to do with their lives. I wanted to give them the gift of spending their days with the person (and people) who most cares for them...me (and their family)! (And me the gift of hours upon hours getting to know them.) These are the reasons I homeshool, and so many more. Thanks forgiving me a chance to celebrate all the reasons why!

I checked everything except freedom from religious pressure and get out of an unhealthy situation at school (Dd has never attended). My "other" reason is that Dd is such a great person, that I don't want to miss a moment, and I won't trust the world with her most precious years!

Because my five-year-old daughter had never been away from me for more than a couple of hours at a time, so was definitely not ready for all-day kindergarten (and neither was I!).

My son has ADHD. I homeschool to provide an environment to support his learning style (short bursts during his "good" times and let him outside to play often during his times he can't sit still). He is also very bright so I cater his learning to his pace.

I'm with Ruth, because God told me to and until He tells me to stop, I will keep on doing what He says!

Thanks, Tammy, for giving us the option to choose them all - I couldn't choose just one, when in reality EVERY option applies to us!! Here's my write-in answer for "other" - "Because the Bible tells me to!"

We also homeschool for scheduling flexibility. My MIL was in town for a month to visit and we did very little or our paperwork schooling during traditional school hours.

We, of course, had plenty of educational experiences just hanging with Grammy.

Also, it allows my husband to take jobs out of the state or country and for our family to join him and have those wonderful educational experiences, too.

And I never want to go to a museum, theme park, aquarium, etc. on the weekends after experiencing the joy of going during school hours.

This is the best WDYHS poll I've seen to date.

I chose "Other," which for me would be:

"For the same reason I feed, shelter, and clothe them; supporting and feeding the intellect is part of being a parent."

Yes, I am purposely "misunderstanding" the question. I view non-schooling, in our case, as a default state, rather than as an alternative, and so I took the question literally, instead of as "Why do you homeschool (instead of sending them to school)?"

A suggestion:

Please consider breaking "To include more moral or religious instruction" into separate questions.

An individual might, certainly, check both of them, but there are those of us for whom the "moral" part is applicable, while the "religious instruction" part is not.
