I have a Canon point and shoot G40 I think, wich does give me control if I desire but have rarely used those fuctions. Useful for family functions, etc. In my opinion, if your serious about photography you need the full flexibility of DSLR and if affordable 20 MP which the price is coming down fast though the lenses to match the resolution will lag. Since Kodachrome is now a thing of the past is high resolution photography going the same way as audio has from high definition, wide dynamic range to mp3 ? I do own two point and shoots and keep the smaller one with me. I seriously doubt I will ever own a DSLR. While my point and shoot is a better camera than what's in my iPhone, and it's small, I use the iPhone camera for out and about spur of the moment shots. If I want do do anything even close to serious, I drag my DSLR in it's backpack along. That said, I've got some pretty darned good shots from my iPhone Camera. The quality is not as good at the point and shoot i have but I cannot directly upload to Facebook, Youtube, etc. with my point and shoot like i can with my Droid X. If I dont ahve my DSLRI, then I'll use my phone... which has great quality....even can take GREAT macro shots.... Although I do not bring my Sony DSCT500 on a daily basis owing to the fact that my iPhone 4 sometimes come in handy, I would still prefer a point and shoot camera.
