Posted by (Not)ch 1 minute ago. If you think about it logically, the moon isn't a single block and neither is the sun. You can make circles in minecraft if you make them big enough, and what's bigger than a moon or sun? You can change the texture if you want easily anyway. Notch made them squares in the beginning more as a joke anyway... I think....
