From amos on August 11, 2008 at 6:34 am. IP Logged, 24.9.163.x Report Abuse Here's a fun question: Who's Japan's greatest ally and friend? I bet if you asked them, it'd be the folks who forcibly reinvented their country 63 years ago. Keep that in mind when people moan about Iraq. From Fred on August 11, 2008 at 6:31 am. IP Logged, 209.103.242.x Report Abuse Israel does not belong on that list. Israel is for Israel no matter who else is hurt. They are allies to no one. From Tatterdemalian on August 11, 2008 at 6:27 am. IP Logged, 75.251.57.x Report Abuse As much as I admire Israel for their will to live when the "internationalist" world is determined to kill them, I'd have to go with Australia. If the US ever became an open threat to Israel's survival, as it might if Jimmy Carter's latest incarnation is elected president, they would turn on us (or at least I hope they would, because quite frankly we would deserve it). Australia, on the other hand, would stick by us even if we did far worse. From mike g on August 11, 2008 at 6:26 am. IP Logged, 164.62.7.x Report Abuse Ditto Jim in Texas' comment: My wife is British, and I spend every holiday there. There is deep, deep anti-Americanism in the UK, and it becomes more visible each time I visit. The BBC is profoundly anti-American, and even "conservative" papers like the Times and Telegraph exhibit it. Anyone who doubts this should consult the archives of the British media in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 -- boatloads of schadenfreude. From R. Pete on August 11, 2008 at 6:21 am. IP Logged, 99.172.181.x Report Abuse An ally is someone who is willing to do your dirty work and suck it up. Israel owes us, they know it, they do it when they can. Australia pulls its own weight so is a de facto ally through no fault of its own. It is also a peer in having been a former British colony. Britain chafes at its responsibility and would like out of the special relationship. And as Basra showed, its staying power is on the wane. If it was a real ally it would recall its ambassador from Russia (Russia has been b###h slapping them for some time) to give the rest of us, particularly the rest of Europe, some maneuvering room in the Caucuses. From GW on August 11, 2008 at 6:18 am. IP Logged, 207.101.242.x Report Abuse Quote: Most Powerful: Britain Most alligned: Australia Willing to do the most: Israel I think this is a good description. I would like to vote for Israel, but then I recall, as others have stated, their active espionage against us. Also, weren't they selling our UAV technology over to China? From RC in reply to GW on August 11, 2008 at 5:22 pm. IP Logged, 93.172.129.x Report Abuse Does anyone truly think that the US doesn't actively spy on Israel? (If it doesn't, the CIA is even more of an embarrassment than I thought.) As to Israel's selling UAV or other technology to China: 1. While I understand Israel's motivations, I condemn that 2. The "our" is dubious; it's an open question to me which of the US and Israel is more advanced in that field 3. Let's not forget that the US sells advanced military technology to countries which aren't particularly friendly to Israel. Until the day we live in a perfect world (cf utopia), I'd say Israel is a pretty damn good ally. Who's the best? I dunno, who do you love most, Mommy or Daddy?

From Pierre Boulez on August 11, 2008 at 6:17 am. IP Logged, 64.81.44.x Report Abuse This poll reflects too many feelings of the moment. Britain has been a solid ally for 60 plus years. Don't mean to diminish the status of Australia, Poland, Denmark etc, and appreciate them all. They are all solid people. But longevity counts for a lot. BTW, this poll makes me uncomfortable: like choosing between best friends. Not somehting to even discuss. Its unseemly in a way. Better to note we have "allies, (UK, Australia, etc), sometime friends (France) and the rest. And the guy who says countries have "interests,"..Chirac's quotation of someone else overlooks a lot: feelings motivate much. This poll shows that. From Robert Blair in reply to Pierre Boulez on August 11, 2008 at 5:35 pm. IP Logged, 203.111.190.x Report Abuse Pierre, Your grasp of history is shaky. Australia has been at the US side for every major war since 1900. Britain hasn't. Suspecting you may be either French or Francophone perhaps you might know why there are villages scattered around the Australian countryside with names like Villiers-Brettonaux, Poziers, Ypres etc ?
