What, just because he doesn't act like a Republican part lackey or toady, and because he has friends on the other side of the aisle, he must be a liberal?
McCain is a conservative with that most valuable of qualities - he's well liked by moderates, and even respected by liberals. I guess that's enough for some conservatives to convince themselves that he must not be one of them. Too bad people don't actually look at his overall voting record.
The American Conservative Union rates all congressman:
Lifetime ACU rating for John McCain - 83
Lifetime ACU rating for Thompson - 86
And yet Thompson was the great conservative hope for people, while McCain somehow isn't a true conservative.
